Emergency Responders
When natural disasters strike or catastrophic events occur, LRAD systems have proven highly effective in emergency communications situations. Ground-based and helicopter-mounted LRAD systems provide disaster relief officials and first responders with the means to quickly broadcast warnings, critical instructions and information to affected populations over large areas where power and communications have been disrupted. LRAD frees emergency personnel and responders from having to individually provide instructions and directions, allowing them to attend to other critical duties.
Utilizing advanced sound reproduction technologies and innovative acoustic materials, LRAD is vastly superior in loudness, intelligibility and broadcast distance to bullhorns and other portable mass notification systems. While most bullhorns are vaguely intelligible up to approximately 20 meters, LRAD provides highly intelligible voice broadcasts over distances up to 2 miles.
LRAD systems were successfully deployed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to communicate to survivors stranded by floodwaters on tops of cars and houses and for mass notification around the Superdome. In 2010, the U.S. Military utilized several LRAD systems in Haiti to assist with emergency communications with earthquake survivors. Portable LRAD 100X systems were used to communicate in multiple languages to survivors gathered around aid stations and LRAD 500X systems were mounted on helicopters to broadcast messages regarding the locations of aid stations and supplies across earthquake damaged areas.
In March 2011, Japanese disaster relief authorities used LRAD 100X and LRAD 500X systems for mass communication and to coordinate search and rescue operations after the devastating earthquake and tsunami. In October 2011, Thailand's Department of Disaster Response ordered LRAD systems to support their flood relief efforts.
